Hi Peggy,
I recently left Queenstown for the north island to pursue professional work. Up until a few days ago, Queenstown Yoga was the only studio I had practiced in. You, Kelly and Nicci were the only instructors I had worked with. While attending a bikram session in a new studio, in a new city; I confirmed a notion I already suspected to be true. You and your staff are outstanding teachers and operate a top notch studio.
I felt like I had joined a close knit group of people from the very first time I walked in to Queenstown Yoga. I was always addressed by my first name as were all the other students. When beginners attended class, the instructors took the time to explain each posture, give advice, and offer encouragement. I noticed that you were particularly skilled at absorbing details of your students’ practice; quickly recognizing and pointing out both improvements and setbacks. Over a short period of time, I learned exactly what the desired result of each posture was, even if I could not achieve it. I also felt consistently challenged at Queenstown Yoga. My instructors were very good about pushing me to beyond my perceived limits. I never felt like I was listening to a robot call out memorized commands to a group of drones.
I just wanted to send drop you line and tell you guys to keep up the good work! I stuck with bikram yoga because you inspired me to. If I attended my first class in the studio I practiced in a few days ago, I honestly don’t think I would still be doing yoga today.
All the best,
Robert Romero

During practice, muscles are contracted and stretched at a cellular, biochemical level. Lipids and proteins reorganize optimally in such stretching, allowing for better circulation. Joint mobility and range of motion is increased, and strength is built by the use of gravity. Muscles and joints are balanced.

Blood and calcium are brought to the bones. Working against gravity strengthens the bones. The organs of the immune system within the bones (red marrow) are boosted.

The lymph nodes are massaged, lymph is pumped throughout the body, and white blood cells are distributed throughout the body as the lymphatic system works more efficiently.

There is compression and extension to the thymus, spleen, appendix and intestines; lungs are stretched and flushed out by increased blood circulation. The endocrine glands are encouraged to secrete appropriate hormones, and the communication between hormones and various glands and systems of the body is perfected. Toxins and waste are eliminated through the organs of elimination.

The nerves are stimulated by compression and extension, improving communication within the systems of the body and  supplying fresh blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout. The brain is stimulated by improved circulation and by varying blood pressure.

Yoga is improvement of the bodies systems from the inside out, including

  • Reshapes your body
  • Restores flexibility
  • Tones, strengthens, and lengthens your muscles
  • Strengthens your spine
  • Improves circulation
  • Reduces risk of sports injury
  • Achieves relief from pain
  • Reduces your weight – lose pounds by balancing your metabolism
  • Raises energy level
  • Diminishes the effects of stress
  • Increases balance, coordination, focus and discipline
  • Clears your mind
  • Calms your soul
  • Ensures healthy and balanced functioning of the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, digestive, elimination, respiratory, endocrine, and mental systems of the body

Why the Heat?

  • Vaso-dialation helps clean the circulatory system
  • Warms the muscles for greater flexibility
  • Helps achieve a deeper stretch
  • Flushes toxins from the body
  • Improves efficiency of the immune system
  • Creates a cardiovascular workout
  • Burns calories
  • Builds endurance

Why the Government needs to make Bikram yoga compulsary

There is one simple action that the Government could take which would slash hospital waiting lists.

It would turn us from a nation of porkies into a nation of bendies.

Plus it would seriously put a dent in the increasing number of us who are living with mental illness at some stage in our lives.

This one action would take commitment from us though.

We would have to invest 90 minutes 3 times a week into our physical, mental and emotional health. That’s 4 and a half hours.

This is a testimonial written by a student Evan Thomas who started Bikram yoga with the 60 day challenge.

I have been asked to relate my yoga experience to you. I have only been doing yoga for the past three months. I am by no means a master or yogi but I am definitely a better person for the experience!

This is going to be hard to do because it is different for every body! Bikram Yoga is nuts! This is what I have embraced. Why would you meditate in a 40 degree room, while stretching and compressing your body? This Bikram stuff is so good for you on so many levels. It helps you in ways you don’t even think off.

The benefits for me have been amazing! I am most proud of the fact I have not had a cigarette since starting yoga. I have stopped smoking 30 – 40 cigarettes a day and even managed to lose some weight! I just didn’t want to smoke straight after putting my body through that. Even water taste’s better! All of a sudden you will feel more awake, more alert, your senses are heightened

I find it calming to have somewhere to come for just a couple of hours a day or even a week where you allowed to focus on yourself, and just forget about everything else and yes relax (when they let you)

The games you play in your practice are yours, from mental to physical. Just the heat is enough to do your “head in” but that’s the point!

Through yoga I have also met some really good people, happy calm cool people, who all seem to just bubble along sweetly, always smiling and laughing about life!

Breathe in Breathe out

Its only Yoga!

Alon Sagee on Migraines and the Heat, very interesting article

I feel like it’s time to share something I’ve been quietly excited about for a few months. As The Yoga Business Coach, I take great care to not endorse one yoga over another. I believe it’s up to each of us to find the yoga style or combination of styles that serves us best. Over …
